Choosing the Framing for Your New Glass Shower

Morgane Arnaud

One of the main decisions you'll need to make when installing a glass shower regards the framing style you want around the panels. To help you make the best choice for your bathroom, consider the following details.

Fully-Framed Showers

One type of enclosure you could install is a fully-framed shower, in which each glass panel is fringed with metal. This style gives a traditional feel to a bathroom. Because the framing stands out, you can work it into the room as a distinct design feature. While you could connect slim aluminium silver frames, you could also fit striking black matte ones. You can echo the metal finish in other areas of the bathroom too. For instance, repeat a silver or black finish on light fixtures, a mirror frame and tapware. Fully-framed showers are generally the most economical option.

Semi-Framed Showers

Another possibility is a semi-framed shower, which features limited metal edging. Sometimes, these enclosures are framed along the top and bottom and the edges of the glass and walls. Semi-framed showers give a sleeker effect because the glass door panel presents a smooth face with only discreet hinges for support.

As with the fully-framed and frameless models, you can build different-shaped enclosures, including square, hexagonal, rectangular, or round ones. With less framing, your bathroom will seem more open and spacious, as a large area of the room won't be visually cut off with a heavy shower structure.

Frameless Showers

Frameless shower screens have minimal framing — the glass panels are joined with brackets, hinges, and possibly support bars. These showers can seem almost invisible, giving your bathroom the feeling of one integrated space. The minimal screens don't divide the shower area from the rest of the room. If you have a small bathroom, this spaciousness can help open up the area and generate a pleasant ambience. While fully-framed showers can cost more than other styles, they evoke the sleekest effect.

Regardless of its framing style, a shower screen can consist of clear, low-iron, or frosted glass panels. Clear standard glass emits a green tinge that's caused by the iron content within the glass. Low-iron glass, though, is crystal-clear. If you want to create a more private shower, you could place frosted screens instead. You'll have different transparency options and also decorative etchings to choose from. Thus, you can make the shower as open or private as you wish.
