Factors That Affect the Price of a Glass Shower

It can be hard to get a ballpark figure for installing a glass shower. The price varies depending on the size, framing and other factors. Read on to discover more.
Custom or Pre-Configured
One thing that affects the cost of a glass shower is whether you build a custom shower or choose a pre-configured design. Custom showers are usually frameless models. Contractors can connect one or several glass screens of different sizes using brackets and other hardware supports. They can custom-make your shower into a shape and size that suits your bathroom, making the most of its area. This customised option is usually more expensive than choosing a prefabricated enclosure that is set into the bathroom.
Of course, the size and number of screens required are relevant also, as bigger panels and more of them will increase the overall cost. If you want a custom design, you can keep costs to a minimum by choosing from standard glass shower screens that don't need to be cut explicitly for your shower. A more complex hexagonal shape can add to construction costs as well. If you like the wet room effect, you could inquire about fitting a single fixed screen in the bathroom, which may be more straightforward.
Glass Type
Another factor that affects a glass shower's cost is the type of glass you install. Standard transparent toughened glass has a green tinge that is more obvious along the edges. You may opt to eliminate this by installing low-iron glass, which is typically more expensive.
The thickness of the glass screens also impacts the price. Regulations specify a minimum thickness for framed and frameless showers. Still, you could pay more for a thicker glass than required, which will create a sturdier shower.
Decorative Glass
Decorative glass treatments can also boost the shower cost. For example, you may decide to install frosted glass to make the shower more private. You'll have many decorative glass options to consider, particularly for frameless showers, where you have more design freedom to choose what you want. For example, you may opt for a smooth satin look or an ornate pattern. The frosting can also vary to create more opaque or more see-through screens, whichever you prefer.
Other decorative glass options that also obscure the view into the shower include patterned and toned glass. Patterned screens are moulded into a 3-D pattern during manufacture, and toned glass is created when coloured minerals are added to the glass mix. These decorative techniques will probably increase costs, depending on the specific options. In return for paying more, you'll get extra privacy from the stunning decorative glass.
